10 Things To Consider Before Buying a Breast Pump

10 Things To Consider Before Buying a Breast Pump

Buying a breast pump can be nerve wrecking with so many choices!

Here are 10 things to consider before making your decision.

1. Type of pump
Would you need a hospital grade wired pump, a handsfree wearable pump, a manual pump or a 2-in-1 pump?

2. Price of Pump
What is your budget?
Is this a 'standby' pump before investing in one when you are sure of your milk yield?

3. Warranty
How many years of warranty is included?
Does it start from date of purchase or date of birth of your baby?
How will the warranty be registered and what does it cover?

4. Post Sales Service
What are the post sales support that you can receive which may value add to your purchase?
What are the channels available for getting in touch with the Company if you need help and what are the response time for queries?
Is it complimentary, if not what will be the cost?

5. Flange Sizes
What are the flange sizes available and whether there are alternative for sizes that are unavailable which you may need.
(Measure your nipple size from 38 weeks, before your pump session. We have a post to guide you on measuring or you can DM us and we can send it to you!)

6. Portability
Would you need to move around or be outdoors often while pumping?
Other than wearable pumps, there are very compact hospital grade pumps (wired) available which are great for bringing around too!

7. Ease of Washing
How many parts are there?
Is it easy to wash and assemble?

8. Ease of Use
Are the settings complicated to understand and use?
Seek to know all the functions of your pump before birth so that there is one less thing to stress over.

9. Ease of Milk Storage
Does the milk pump direct to a milk storage bag? If so is it convenient for you to wear while pumping with an attachment?
Are the storage bags exclusive to the brand and will this restrict your choices of better or more affordable storage bags?

10. Accessibility and Cost of Spare Parts
Can you buy the spare parts anytime should you need them urgently?
Where can you get them or how fast can it be delivered?
Spare parts usually require changing every 4-6 months (or more often) so the cost needs to be factored in when buying your pump.

We hope that this guide is useful for you to start your search, do look at reviews too for a gauge on the user experience.

As with everything breast feeding, finding the right breast pump is a trial and error process, we are different so there is no 'one pump fits all' solution.

Be patient, be open and hang in there Mamas! 💕
