How much breastmilk do most mothers produce each day?
The answer can vary, but here's a guide on average after a few weeks of breastfeeding or pumping. However, it’s important to remember that every mom’s journey is unique, and we respect and admire all the hard work you’re doing—no need to compare!
This guide is just a reference for new moms, but your experience is YOUR own, and that’s what matters most.
Day 1 – 3
In the initial days postpartum, moms produce colostrum, a thick, nutrient-rich fluid that is produced in small quantities. This is all your newborn needs during this time, typically 1-2 teaspoons per feeding.
Day 3 – 5
By now, most moms start to see their milk supply kicking in. On average, moms will produce around 300-500ml per day during this stage.
Weeks 2 – 6
As we establish our milk supply, most moms will produce 500-800ml per day of milk. It is typical to see a slight increase in supply each week.
After Week 6
By 6 weeks, your body is typically adjusted to the baby’s feeding needs, and on average, moms may produce 800-1,000ml per day.
Remember, every breastfeeding journey is unique, and it’s not always easy. We deeply respect and admire all mothers for their dedication. This is simply a guide for new moms to reference, and it’s important to know that everyone’s experience is different.
