Tips in Giving Your Child Medicine

Check out some tips in giving your child medicine.

TELL THEM GENTLY

Prepare your child.  Let them know that:

  • it’s time for them to take their medicine
  • explain to them why it’s necessary
  • what you’re going to do

While younger babies may not fully understand your words, your tone can help them feel calm

USE AN ORAL SYRINGE

Gently place the syringe toward the inner lining of your child’s cheek.

Slowly release the medication and pause, give your child the time to swallow before administering more medication.

Avoid squirting medication in the back of the throat as this can lead to coughing, gagging or even choking.

OR USE A SHALLOW CUP

When your child has mastered drinking from a cup, you can also encourage self-feeding by offering the medicine in a small shallow cup.

Take small sips at a time!

MAKE THE MEDICATION MORE PALATABLE

Mix medication with milk.  Offer it to your child via a bottle or straw cup.

For babies who have already started solids, you can mix the medication with a puree-type food like oatmeal, yogurt or applesauce.

If your child is absolutely refusing their medication, this is the time when distractions may be necessary.  If turning on the TV, watching a video, or listening to some music is the only way forward, do what you need to do.  Hang in there!
