The Difference Between Foremilk and Hindmilk

The Difference Between Foremilk and Hindmilk

Breastfeeding mothers make standard breast milk that can be divided into two types — foremilk and hindmilk. Foremilk is the milk that your baby drinks at the beginning of a feeding, and hindmilk follows it.

Typically, foremilk is mostly water combined with other nutrients, and hindmilk is highly fatty. Both contain lactose that your baby needs to develop properly.

The difference between Foremilk and Hindmilk:

Foremilk

  • Quenches baby’s thirst
  • Higher lactose and protein content
  • Usually low in calories and fat

Hindmilk

  • Thick and creamy texture
  • Comes at the end of a breastfeeding session
  • High in calories and fat
